Mobius report 52/2023 – Russian Improvised FPV Racing Drone-Based Loitering Munitions

In recent months, FPV racing drones employed as improvised loitering munitions have been documented in use by Russian forces fitted with an improvised payload comprising a PVC pipe fragmentation IED. The payload contains a gray plastic explosive with added metal fragmentation, and safety fuse with an igniter for igniting the fuse before flight. In some of the documentation, an improvised point-detonating fuse can be identified on the front of the payload. Concurrently, there is documentation of standard KZ-6 shaped charge payloads with electrical initiation used with the same types of drones. The copious documentation, by the Russians and the targeted Ukrainians, indicates Russian FPV drones employed as loitering munitions have tactical significance in this arena.
