On July 6, 2023, the Mexican Army discovered a booby-trapped VBIED following a confrontation between two cartels in Los Altos Norte, in Teocaltiche municipality, in Jalisco State. The VBIED was discovered during the nighttime.
The keys had been left in the ignition and the VBIED was rigged to initiate when the accelerator pedal was pressed.
This is the first time such a booby trap has been documented in a VBIED in Mexico and it comes amid a growing increase in the use of IEDs, VBIEDs and armed drones by different cartels in the country, against the background of narco turf wars.
