On August 9, 2023, two armed groups affiliated with the People’s Defense Force operating in the Mandalay Region, in central Myanmar, published a video showing its members preparing the bodies of improvised stick grenades. The grenades, of a uniform model, were produced by casting molten metal into premade molds to create the inner part of the grenade bodies. The initiation systems of these grenades are safety fuse and a commercial pyrotechnic pull igniter, installed inside the tail sections of the grenades. Various models of stick grenades, both standard and improvised, have been used by Burmese armed groups for some time. The quasi-industrial production of several models of this type of grenade has increased of late, mainly during 2023. Concurrently, there is a continuing and consistent improvement in the production capabilities of the militants across the country, who are increasingly attempting to mimic standard munition items with the means at their disposal.
