On August 17, 2023, the National Police of Peru discovered a large cache of weapons in an area called Cerro Galalini, in Tintay Punco District, in Tayacaja Province, in the Huancavelica Region, in the VRAEM. The recovered items were associated with a faction of the Shining Path group (officially the Communist Party of Peru,) and included various firearms with compatible ammunition, explosives, detonators, electric wires, syringes, detonating cord and a 12 V battery. In recent years, numerous Shining Path weapons caches have been seized, all in the VRAEM area. These include many different types of weapons reportedly intended for use in attacks, including standard explosives and materials for the production of IEDs. The Peruvian terrorist organization has weakened in recent years, compared to its number of members and attacks it carried out in the 1990s, but it is still considered the most dangerous terrorist organization in Peru.
