In recent months, camouflage pattern textile with a layer of metallized polyester or similar material sewn into it has been documented in the war in Ukraine, intended for use as a camouflage countermeasure against commercial UAV thermal imaging tools. The mass proliferation of commercial UAVs in the battlefield in Ukraine has produced a need for various countermeasures against them and their detection equipment. The potential of metallized polyester or other inexpensive, available materials, such as space blankets as a means of concealment has been discussed for many years among different groups that employ irregular warfare tactics. The Russian-Ukrainian war has by far exceeded any other conflict with regards to the employment of commercial UAVs for combat missions, thus encouraging both sides to evaluate the potential of camouflage-style textiles with an internal metallized polyester layer.
