Mobius 84/2023 – Tripwire-Actuated, Syringe-Based Booby Trapped IEDs, Colombia

Colombian security forces have documented numerous IED scenes and weapons caches uncovered during search and arrest operations in their war against armed groups in the country. In this framework, from time to time, we have identified new and creative initiation systems being used by these organizations. Recently, on November 25, 2023, a medical syringe-based tripwire-actuated improvised pull switch attached to an IED in a tree was discovered in Arauca Department, in northern Colombia, in an area hotly contested by the ELN and FARC dissidents. Although to the best of our knowledge, this is the first documentation of this specific booby trap in Colombia, it is recognizable from other arenas in the world and was documented about eight years ago in Libya.
