Since the beginning of 2023, there have been a number of documented attacks against infrastructure targets, primarily bridges, across Myanmar, mostly in the south and east of the country. The attacks were notable in that they produced significant damage to the targeted bridges, rendering them impassable and requiring prolonged repair or reconstruction. In at least one of the attacks, militants used one or more plastic jerrycan IEDs, emplaced at key points adjacent to the bridge foundations. In another example of a thwarted attack in mid-November 2023, seven RCIEDs cased in plastic jerrycans were used in an attempt to destory a railway bridge segment. Militants in Myanmar have repeatedly targeted bridge and railway infrastructure since late 2021, but until early 2023, these were relatively limited in quality and scope, and while somewhat impairing movement, caused no major disruptions in the junta’s ability to move its forces and material. The recent surge in attacks suggests militants are now prioritizing infrastructure as their main target in this area, applying lessons learned and improved capabilities and MOs. As the ongoing conflict between the myriad of armed groups in the country and Burmese security forces shows no signs of abating, local security forces must increase their vigilance against this threat
