TGA0766 – Improvised Rocket Launchers Concealed in a Fuel Tanker, Syria-Iraq Border

On December 3, 2023, two improvised rocket launchers used by a Shia Iraqi group named the Islamic Resistance in Iraq were recovered in western Iraq, near the border with Syria, after they were used to attack a US military base on the other side of the border. The launchers were concealed inside a fuel tanker, and their firing systems were concealed inside the battery compartment in the bottom of the truck. While similar cases have been documented in the past, this camouflage method is relatively new in Iraq and attests to a certain degree of creativity. This attack demonstrates the increased activity of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq against US military bases in Iraq and Syria, in solidarity with the Palestinians amid the ongoing Al-Aqsa Flood/Iron Swords War between the Gaza Strip and Israel. The recovery of the fuel tanker marks the possible comeback of improvised rocket launchers mounted on trucks – a common TTP in Iraq in the past two decades.
