During November and December 2023, in a series of military ceremonies and exhibitions, the Islamic Republic of Iran Army unveiled new models of tube-launched loitering munitions, dubbed Shahin-1 and Sanjar. Exhibited on the helipads of Iran Navy warships, these similar UAS may be reserved for naval attacks, though they can be easily adapted for use from any terrain, mounted on various types of vehicles. Notably larger than previously revealed domestically produced tube-launched loitering munitions, the new UAS made by Iran ostensibly continues Iran’s military industry’s recent focus on this type of weapon design, which offers favorable combat advantages for a small squad over conservative models of combat UAS.
