During January 2024, two separate incidents of improvised bomblets reportedly released from drones were documented in Burkina Faso, marking the first recorded appearances of this weaponry in the country. These incidents represent initial evidence suggesting the alleged use of armed UAVs in Burkina Faso. Based on their locations, these purported aerial attacks can be attributed to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, the prominent jihadi group in the western Sahel region, which is already known to utilize UAVs for reconnaissance and propaganda purposes. The recovered unexploded ammunition items suggest that the group is taking steps to transition towards deploying drones for offensive purposes as well.
