On January 20, 2024, a child noticed a suspicious object in a pile of garbage on the sidewalk of Jindires Street in the central area of the city of Afrin, in Aleppo Governorate, northern Syria. Security forces and bomb technicians arrived at the scene and neutralized the IED. Based on the documentation, the items found included a pair of round sticky IEDs with metal ball fragmentation, fitted with RC initiation systems, reminiscent of sticky IEDs used by Kurdish forces in Syria in recent years. Over the course of the last eighteen months, a variety of sticky IEDs have been documented in Syria, along with diverse initiation systems.
