On August 22, 2023, Russian soldiers documented a VOIED planted by retreating Ukrainian forces at one of their positions. The booby trap comprised an explosive payload camouflaged in a Javelin ATGM transit case. The payload appears to have been rigged with a photoresistor designed to initiate the explosive payload when the case is opened and light triggers the sensor. VOIEDs in the form of booby-trapped mines and grenades are common in the Ukrainian arena, used by both sides of the conflict. The camouflaged VOIED with a complex initiation mechanism documented herein provides an interesting example of the sophisticated and diversified use of IEDs with unique features in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
