In recent months, we have seen increasing documentation in Russian and Ukrainian social media of what can be described as aerial fights between weaponized commercial UAVs to undermine enemy surveillance and attack missions. These methods include bombing the targeted UAV from above with small munitions and bomblets at close range, as well as loitering munition strikes against the target, and even mid-air-ramming (“Taran”) tactic. The documentation shows these different attack TTPs have become common, illustrating the continued high pace of development in commercial weaponized UAV combat tactics. These methods are likely employed as a result of the shortage, failure, or limitations of interception methods and tools (i.e. ECM/C-UAS/EW,) or as a cost-effective alternative to other kinetic means of destruction.
