In March 2024, several incidents involving balloons fitted with explosive payloads were documented in Russian territory. While armed balloons predate the war between Russia and Ukraine, in various locations around the world, and in different time eras, the use of components that enable geopositioning and tracking with such tactics are seldom seen. The alleged Ukrainian armed balloons contained electronic components that ostensibly enable the release of the explosive payload. An examination of the components suggests the effectiveness of these specific attempts to enhance armed balloons is highly questionable. Nevertheless, this concept represents a unique example of asymmetric aircraft warfare that can be applied to aircraft other than balloons.
