Mobius report 1/2025 – New Russian Submunitions Delivered by Cruise Missiles, Ukraine

Since June 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine  have documented several incidents in which a new type of Russian fragmentation submunition was delivered via Russian cruise missiles, specifically from the Kh (X) family of cruise missiles. Two types of submunitions were documented. While similar in appearance, and fitted with identical fuzes, they have a slightly different shape. The Kh family of cruise missiles is being used extensively by Russia in the war, but this missile was previously documented without submunitions, with the most well-known incident being the July 8, 2024, bombing of Okhmatdyt Hospital in Kyiv. The modification of the Kh family of cruise missiles to accommodate this new submunition increases their lethality and complicates ordnance clearing work in areas targeted by these missiles, as cluster munitions tend to have a high ratio of UXO.
