On January 15, 2025, documentation of a surface-to-air missile known as the Persezan-359 was showcased for the first time by Iran. The missile bears similarities to a familiar surface-to-air missile known as the 358, which was showcased on January 8, 2025, as part of the “Great Prophet 19” exercise in Iran. Of note, this was the first documentation of a 358 missile being launched on Iranian soil. The 358 missile has been documented in various arenas in the Middle East, including Iraq, and in Lebanon by Hezbollah, as well as a local version in use by the Houthis in Yemen, called the Saqr. There are two versions of the 358 missile, with slightly different features and capabilities.
This missile family is considered to have particularly high performance, and acquires its target with the help of an optical homing head and a 360-degree detection capability. According to publications, these weapons were responsible for shooting down several American and Israeli UAVs in recent years.
