Mobius report 95/2024 – Tunnels in Syria Used for Command and Control, Weapons Storage and Escape

Within a few days in December 2024, the Assad regime fell, and Syria was taken over by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and other militant groups led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammad al-Joulani. As part of the exposure of weapons and warfare tactics, a variety of tunnels used by various organizations was documented. The tunnels were used for protection, shelter, escape, and as command and control centers. Documentation of tunnels used by Syrian Democratic Forces demonstrates their extensive utilization for storing various types of weapons in the Manbij and Tel Rifa’t areas.

Documentation from recent weeks shows both improvised and standard weapons, as well as tunnels of various types and sizes, some dug and others constructed. Some of these tunnels are relatively crude, while others are more complex, featuring paved floors, ceramic tiles, electricity, and other enhancements.
