During December 2024, documentation started to surface of Syrian militants and / or civilians seizing and disposing of Captagon pills across Syria, and around Damascus in particular. The drug is often found concealed inside everyday products, such as electrical devices or in their packages, as well as inside designated casings created to look like replicas of regular day-to-day items, such as fruit. While all parties involved in the fighting in Syria were engaged in these smuggling activities, the Assad regime played a key role in the global Captagon trade, and its fall leaves a vacuum waiting to be filled by another party. The Syrian revolutionaries appear to be disposing of massive amounts of the drug previously produced by the regime, often by setting it on fire in a rather flashy manner, likely as part of their victory celebrations.
