Mobius report 10/2025 – Utilizing Drones for the Safe Defusal and Destruction of Explosive Devices

On January 11, 2025, Russian forces documented their successful neutralization of a Ukrainian PTM-L1 mine using a drone. The method involved dragging a metal rod tied to a rope, which was attached to the drone, until the mine was triggered.

Over the past two years, drones have been increasingly utilized to support EOD units, employing various techniques to neutralize or destroy explosive devices, including mines and other threats, across different combat zones.

The most extensive documentation of drone-assisted neutralization of explosive devices has emerged from the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The prolonged fighting has driven the demand for innovative, efficient, and straightforward methods that not only enhance safety for bomb disposal personnel, but are also readily accessible to both sides.
