Mobius report 15/2025 – The Islamic State in Somalia, 2024-2025

In January and February 2025, Somali security forces conducted a series of targeted operations in Bari region, in Puntland State, in northeastern Somalia. The operations were aimed at dismantling Islamic State in Somalia-affiliated militant networks. These operations resulted in the seizure of significant weapons stockpiles, explosives, and drones, underscoring the group’s intent to escalate its attacks.

Despite continued counterterrorism efforts led by Puntland security forces, the Islamic State in Somalia has demonstrated adaptability and has expanded its presence, posing a persistent and evolving security threat.

The increasing sophistication of the seized weapons indicates a concerted effort by the group to enhance its capabilities, raising concerns about its long-term objectives in the region.

While Somali security forces, with international support, have successfully disrupted several planned attacks, the sustained growth of IS-S in the region underscores the urgent need for continued and coordinated counterterrorism initiatives to prevent further destabilization.
