Between December 2024, and February 2025, at least seven VBIED attacks were documented in the Manbij area, northeast of Aleppo Governorate, in northern Syria. Since the fall of the Assad regime, this region has been a point of contention between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Turkey-backed Syrian National Army. The VBIED attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals and significant property damage. The Syrian National Army has attributed these attacks to the SDF, though the SDF has denied these accusations. VBIED attacks attributed to Kurdish forces have been previously documented, notably during military campaigns in 2016, 2018, and 2020, in northern Syria. In some of these incidents, as well as in the current wave of attacks, plastic explosives, mobile phone-based RC initiation systems, and improvised RC initiation systems associated with Kurdish IED designs were discovered.
