Since mid-2024, documentation has emerged from the Ukrainian battlefield showing the modification of submunitions into ammunition for use with armed UAVs, with improvised fuzes and initiation mechanisms.
These submunitions, originally designed for air delivery, are particularly suitable for use with drones due to their small size and light weight, which align with armed UAV payload limitations. The most commonly observed types are AO-2.5RT anti-personnel fragmentation submunitions, and PTAB-1M anti-tank submunitions with shaped charges. Both use standard warheads, ensuring high effectiveness even after modification for delivery via armed UAV.
