On April 26, 2025, a massive explosion occurred at Shahid Rajaee Port, in Bandar Abbas – Iran’s primary container facility – resulting in extensive structural damage and causing intense fires throughout the facility. At least 57 people were killed, and more than 1,000 more injured in the initial blast and subsequent fires.
Shahid Rajaee Port is a vital Iranian economic asset, handling approximately 85% of Iran’s total container traffic. Firefighting efforts achieved containment by April 29, 2025. The initiating cause of the explosion was not immediately clear, but documentation of the ignition shows it occurred during bulk packaging transport operations.
Documentation of the initial combustion shows a very strong and energetic material leading to two distinct explosions on site. Iranian reports focused on improperly labeled volatile precursor chemicals, while other reports suggest the flammable substance that led to the massive explosion was missile propellant (sodium perchlorate or ammonium perchlorate).
