In the past year, the trend of the increased use by Mexican cartels of armed UAVs carrying small, improvised bomblets has continued. This tactic has become one of the main methods used in combat between rival groups, as well as against police and military forces across different states in Mexico.
Large quantities of these improvised bomblets have been seized and documented, revealing a wide range of sizes and models. All devices are improvised and equipped with impact fuzes, some external and others internal. The variety and quantity of seized bomblets suggest they are being manufactured by various armed groups and cartels across Mexico, using civilian or pyrotechnic explosive materials as the main charge explosive.
It is evident that Mexico is currently one of the world’s leading hotspots – second only to the Ukrainian conflict – for the production and use of armed UAVs with improvised bomblets.
