Mobius report 32/2022 – Booby Traps Planted by Retreating Russian Forces, Ukraine

Over the past several weeks, and particularly during the month of April 2022, Ukrainian security forces have documented numerous incidents of booby traps placed by retreating Russian forces, primarily in the Kyiv region, in the north of the country, and in Sumy and Kharkiv, in the northeast. The majority of the booby traps were based on different models of grenades rigged with tripwire, classically hung on trees or concealed inside cups, and in some cases concealed in household appliances, alongside known models of Russian-made mines, fitted with different tripwire-based mechanical fuzes. Evidenced in both rural and urban settings, tripwire booby-trapped grenades pose a serious danger to the civilian population, as well as to security forces clearing the different scenes.
