Mobius report 11/2023 – Concealed and Camouflaged IEDs, Myanmar

On February 3, 2023, an IED hidden inside a loudspeaker system was discovered and neutralized in Aungmyethazan Township, in central Myanmar’s Mandalay Region. The next day, the PDF-aligned “Myanmar Islamic Commando – PDF” militia published documentation of the intact speaker system before it was planted at the scene.

In April 2022, IEDs concealed inside loudspeakers by the Little Hero Urban Guerilla Defense Force, based in southern Myanmar’s Yangon Region, were documented.

Recently, further progress has been made in the TTP of concealing IEDs by adapting the method of camouflage/concealment to the target scene. For example, hiding IEDs inside electrical devices placed in urban arenas. This is a continuation of the use of camouflage sleeves, such as concrete barriers, or large damaged barrels to conceal IEDs planted on the sides of roads in areas where military and government forces are being targeted.

In contrast with IEDs used against security forces mainly in open terrain or specific targeted locations, it is evident that militants in the country are perfecting the planning and execution capabilities of attacks incorporating single IEDs, using more creative and sophisticated methods, while placing them at central locations and thus harming civilians within the cities, which they had avoided until now.
