POM-3 scatterable bounding mines first appeared in the war in Ukraine in late March 2022. Since then, additional POM-3 mines have been documented in minefields, as well as internal parts from the remotely deployed cassette delivery system that launches the mines into the targeted area. The most familiar variant of this cassette delivery system is the KPOM-3, which unlike its predecessors, incorporates a five-mode timer that programs the number of hours to the POM-3 mine’s self-destruction after its deployment. Notwithstanding this feature, evidence from minefields shows POM-3 mines that failed to deploy properly, making them a UXO that poses a significant danger to the local population.
