On January 30, 2023, an explosion occurred at the Police Lines Mosque in Peshawar, located in a secure compound housing numerous government facilities. Over 100 people were killed and 200 more were injured, with most of the victims being police officers. At around 1:40 PM, at the beginning of noon prayers in the mosque, a suicide bomber entered the compound wearing a police uniform, and initiated his PBIED inside the front prayer hall of the mosque. The explosion caused the roof of the prayer hall to collapse and resulted in numerous casualties and destruction. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan initially unofficially claimed responsibility for the attack, but later issued an official statement claiming it was not involved.
