On the evening of April 27, 2023, a bank manager was kidnapped and held hostage in his home in Sobrália by a gang of bank robbers. The next morning, two of the gang of five armed robbers strapped a purported PBIED to his body and drove him to his place of work, where they entered the bank with him, and took other bank employees hostage. While the robbers were attempting to access the safe, the alarm was raised by one of the hostages, and when the police arrived, two of them were arrested after negotiations. Bank robberies incorporating extortion tactics is not a new phenomenon in Brazil, and the staff at these institutions have to function in a highly stressful environment, in constant fear they will be the next target. The attack TTP has evolved over time and incorporates some interesting strategies.
