On September 24, 2023, several dozen ethnic Serbian gunmen stormed the village of Banjska, in Zvečan municipality, in northern Kosovo, ambushing a police patrol and killing a police officer.
Weapons recovered after the attack included various former Yugoslav and Serbian items that according to Kosovar authorities, belong to armed Serbian nationalist groups, including one recently designated a terrorist organization by Kosovo. In the first half of 2023, the Kosovar municipality of Zvečan witnessed a significant rise in the seizure of weapons by security forces. While the exact intentions and the unfolding of events is not entirely clear, there are concerns that rising tensions may evolve into an armed conflict.
