TGA0795 – First Documentation of HJ-8L ATGM System in Use by Hamas, Gaza Strip

On June 24, 2024, an Israel Defense Forces combat engineering vehicle was targeted by a Chinese “Red Arrow” ATGM of the HJ-8L variant, in the Tel-Za’arab neighborhood, in Rafah, in the Gaza Strip. The attack was documented with four cameras from different angles and this documentation was later released by the media wing of Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades. This marks the first time an ATGM of this type has been evidenced in use by the Al-Qassam Brigades in Gaza.
The Palestinian terrorist organizations operating in Gaza are known to possess Chinese-made ammunition and weapons, ranging from small arms to AT weapons. The documentation of the HJ-8L ATGM attack is another indication of the use of Chinese ordnance by the groups in the Gaza Strip, and it is estimated that as the fighting continues, more Chinese-made weapons being used by these groups will be evidenced.
The Red Arrow AT missiles, along with the other known Chinese items, join a variety of standard weapons from various sources – North Korean, Iranian and Russian, and even Israeli (stolen,) as well as improvised and repurposed weapons used by the organizations in the Gaza Strip. The diversity of standard and improvised weapons in the possession of the organizations in Gaza poses a unique challenge to the IDF forces, and creates difficulties for the IDF’s infantry, armor and engineering forces operating in the Gaza Strip.
