During September 2024, several Ukrainian and Russian videos were posted online revealing rotary-wing UAVs nicknamed “Dragon Drones,” equipped with an improvised incendiary device that disperses thermite substances to burn forests and uncover enemy movements or positions. The first to employ this TTP was likely the Ukrainians, and the Russians followed their example. The incendiary substances range from unidentified thermite mixtures to standard incendiary submunitions extracted from cluster munitions, such as the ZAB-2.5.
