Beginning in November 2021, armed militants affiliated with the People’s Defense Force in Myanmar began conducting test firing of improvised rockets from production areas across the country, particularly in Sagaing Region in the northwest. A variety of models of improvised rockets have been documented, forged from different materials, with different designs. While at first, the rockets seemed to be limited in terms of their flight performance, as the months passed, and especially since the beginning of 2022, there has been an increasing improvement in the stability and flight of the rockets, along with a marked improvement in the quality and professionalism of the rocket configuration and the final product of the documented rockets. The many models observed at the beginning of this process have been reduced to a few similar models with recurring characteristics. As part of this progression, the various armed groups have begun to make increasing use of improvised rockets to attack Tatmadaw forces, concurrent with the production and continued use of the variety of additional improvised ‘artillery’ weapons at their disposal.
