In recent months, starting in early 2026, released documentation has shown both Ukrainian and Russian forces developing and deploying fixed-wing UAVs to disperse landmines over enemy territory. Available imagery also documents purpose-built mine release systems developed for this purpose. Employing fixed-wing UAV platforms for minelaying offers several key advantages, including the ability to deliver mines over greater distances, minimize personnel exposure to hazardous zones, and rapidly deploy landmines in locations that are difficult or dangerous to access by conventional means. The development of such systems underscores the continued evolution of unmanned minelaying methods, limiting the need for direct human involvement in the immediate area of deployment.
