On November 1, 2022, IID and IED attacks were recorded in over 20 locations in the provinces of Guayas, Esmeraldas and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, in Ecuador. Five police officers were also shot dead in violent episodes, prompted by the imminent mass transfers of prisoners to other correctional facilities in the country. The attacks continued through November 3, 2022, in three main cities – Guayaquil, Esmeraldas and Santo Domingo, spreading to Durán on November 3 – targeting mainly gas stations and police stations, and causing serious damage. Some of the IEDs and IIDs were based on pyrotechnic material and others incorporated commercial explosives.
