On September 11, 2023, in the framework of Bolivarian Shield Operation Catatumbo Lightning 2023, the Armed Forces of Venezuela raided six camps operated by Colombian militant groups in Venezuela.
One of the camps, in Jose Maria Semprún municipality, in Zulia State, in northwestern Venezuela, bordering Colombia, was dedicated to the preparation and assembly of improvised mines and IEDs, and the storage of ammunition and weapons. Among the items recovered from this camp were improvised AP mines with mechanical initiation systems. Identical improvised AP mines have been seized on numerous occasions in caches attributed to FARC dissidents in Colombia in recent years.
