On October 12, 2024, the Colombian Army launched Operation Perseus to regain control over El Plateado, in Argelia municipality, in southern Cauca Department – an area with a strong FARC dissident presence, and an important drug production center.
170 improvised bomblets for drones, improvised AP mines, IEDs, improvised grenades, booby traps, explosives and other items were recovered from the basement of a hotel – most familiar from previous FARC dissident weapons caches in Colombia and Venezuela.
Improvised bomblets in the possession of the FARC dissidents began to surface already in 2018, when militants were caught attempting to weaponize UAVs and were carrying out tests to ascertain the effectiveness of the improvised UAV ammunition. Over time, evidence of the different types of improvised bomblets used with armed UAVs by various FARC dissident groups began to surface, and in the last year, there has been a significant increase in the employment of this TTP by the dissidents as a common means and method of warfare.
