On October 5, 2024, the Jaysh Muhajireen wal-Ansar militia, a jihadist Salafi organization composed of Russian-speaking immigrant fighters, active in the ranks of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, released a video showing attacks against Syrian Arab Army forces in various areas in the northwest and west of Syria. The video starts with mortar fire targeting positions and fortifications of the SAA and its allies, which appear to have been guided by reconnaissance drones. The video then shows armed UAV attacks by the group. The improvised bomblet arsenal presented by the organization is extensive and includes both improvised bomblets based on standard ammunition items, such as rifle grenades or hand grenades, as well as completely improvised bomblets. Several models of improvised bomblets documented in the video were identical to bomblets documented in recent years in use by various militias in northern Syria, mainly those identified with HTS or alternatively, directed by Turkey. The video demonstrates the expansion of the phenomenon of the use of armed UAVs by Salafi-jihadist militias in Syria, as well as the ongoing production line for a variety of unique improvised bomblets.
