TGA0826 – First Documentation of Indirect Fire Weapons Production by IS-Somalia

On February 27, 2025, Puntland counterterrorism forces conducted a raid on an Islamic State-Somalia workshop located in the Cal Miskaad mountains, Bari Region. The operation resulted in the discovery of approximately 2,000 metal casings of various sizes and configurations, likely intended for use in the production of improvised indirect fire munitions. This discovery represents the first documented attempt by IS-S to produce such weapons, signifying a notable advancement in the group’s combat capabilities within Somalia.

Historically, the use of indirect fire weapons in Somalia has been largely attributed to Al-Shabaab, with no prior documentation of IS-S involvement in their production. This development may signal IS-S’s intention to bolster its military capacity, challenge Al-Shabaab’s dominance, and threaten other regional actors.
