On June 25, 2026, the Kremlin-backed Africa Corps posted a video on its official Facebook page featuring a “Djonik” switch recovered in Mali. The Djonik is a widely used initiation system employed with Ukrainian UAV munitions. The markings on the housing identify it as the impact-based variant. Previously, troops of the Malian Armed Forces, supported by combat elements of the Alliance of Sahel States, seized crates containing drones modified to carry and release munitions. Among the recovered materials was a component suspected to be a Djonik switch based on multiple visual similarities.
This event marks the first time the Djonik system has been positively documented outside the Russo-Ukrainian War and demonstrates how new generations of battlefield technologies can emerge in new operational theaters. It also highlights how increasingly sophisticated mechanisms threaten to introduce greater complexity to conflicts and shift the strategic balance. Ukraine’s reported arming of insurgents in Mali joins a growing body of evidence indicating Kyiv’s strategic effort to counter Russian interests across Africa. Other examples include Ukrainian drone strikes against Russian private military contractors and their allies in Sudan, as well as the reported involvement of Ukrainian operators in Somalia as a counterweight to Russian influence and expansion into the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.
