On the morning of July 7, 2026, an IED concealed inside a vehicle initiated in the Al-Hijaz neighborhood of central Damascus, near the headquarters of the Syrian Ministry of Tourism and opposite the Four Seasons Hotel, where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying during his official visit to Syria. Minutes later, a second IED concealed inside a trash can initiated a short distance from the site of the initial explosion.
The twin bombing occurred amid a series of terrorist attacks carried out by the Islamic State in and around Damascus between May and July 2026. The deadliest of these was an IED attack at a café on July 2, which killed 10 civilians and wounded approximately 21 others.
Following the July 7 attack and subsequent investigations, Syrian security forces launched a large-scale counterterrorism operation across Damascus and several locations in Rural Damascus Governorate. According to the Syrian Ministry of Interior, the operation resulted in the dismantlement of the terrorist cell responsible for several recent bombings in the capital, including the July 7 twin IED attack, and the arrest of three IS militants.
