TGA0895 – Previously Undocumented Suspected Improvised AP Mines in Burkina Faso

A July 2026 video report by Burkina Faso’s National Broadcaster included images of 28 cylindrical objects suspected to be improvised anti-personnel mines. This assessment is supported by the devices’ relatively small dimensions, which suggest a limited explosive payload consistent with an AP role. Additionally, the devices included commercial push-button switches, suggesting they are victim-operated through a contact mechanism. Wires and the presence of 9 V batteries further indicate an electric initiation system. These features broadly align with improvised AP mines observed in other combat zones, notably Thailand, Myanmar and Colombia, where militants have employed electrically powered pressure- or contact-initiated devices assembled from improvised components. While uncertainties remains regarding their precise mechanism, these previously undocumented devices nevertheless represent a noteworthy development in the Sahelian IED landscape.
