Mobius report 30/2022 – Instructional Videos for the Preparation of Improvised Electric Hand Grenades, Myanmar

During December 2021, a Burmese YouTube channel posted a series of videos showing how to prepare improvised plastic fragmentation hand grenades from scratch. The grenade bodies are replicas of a standard hand grenade body widely used in Myanmar, both by military forces and by opposition forces to the military regime. The main initiating system is delayed electric initiation. The video series comprehensively and in great detail shows how to prepare almost all of the components of the grenades, and is validated by a field test of a grenade, demonstrating its operation. Another video published by the channel showed a different model of improvised grenade, whose design mimics a stick grenade. This grenade is also electrically initiated. Other improvised grenades from the model shown, fitted with safety fuse, have been documented in the country’s battlefield in recent months, mainly in the Yangon area, and it appears their mass production is already underway by the makers of the instructional video for use by armed militants. The same, or similar methods are also shared by other militants.
