On October 3, 2023, several police officers were injured, one seriously, after they were called to investigate a banner hung on a bush near Moo No. 6, Ban Pa Sak area, Panare District, in Pattani Province, in southern Thailand. The explosion occurred when an officer stepped on a pressure plate and initiated an IED that had been planted some distance from the banner, near a wooden pavilion, while they were waiting for the arrival of the bomb disposal unit.
Pressure plates targeting mainly security forces and government representatives have been previously documented in quite a few incidents, in various configurations, in southern Thailand.
The pressure plate documented in Pattani has a unique square shape, with switches, and has appeared in a small number of incidents over the years, in Pattani, indicating it was prepared by the same IED-maker who has a presence in the area.
