On October 11, 2023, a Russian Telegram channel suggested using several large barrels filled with standard ordnance, placed in dug-out pits, to create a large kill-zone area for convoys and armored vehicles. Barrel IEDs in the Ukrainian arena have been documented in use mainly by the Ukrainian side, particularly during the first several months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The barrel IED configuration in Ukraine generally consists of daisy-chained standard ordnance as the main payload. Barrel IEDs with other configurations, such as barrels filled with HME or several large IEDs, have also been documented in use by many armed groups in other conflict zones.
