Mobius report 33/2025 – IED Trends, Sahel, 2025

The Sahel region continues to represent a high-threat environment for terrorism, with Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimeen maintaining a high operational tempo, particularly in Mali and Burkina Faso. The group’s TTPs and IED initiation systems remain consistent with previously documented patterns. Visual evidence supports earlier assessments of technology and tactical transfers from the Libyan conflict into the Sahel, transfers that likely occurred in previous years.

Notably, JNIM operations are expanding along the Burkina Faso-Coastal States corridor, with a sharp focus on Benin. Over the past year, JNIM has inflicted a rising number of casualties within Beninese territory, reflecting a steady escalation in both the scope and sophistication of its operational capabilities.
