Mobius report 18/2026 – Al-Shabaab Linear Shaped Charges, Somalia

On February 14, Somali National Army and Jubbaland regional forces published images from an operation conducted between Raskamboni and Badhaadhe, near an area identified as Lagta Hoola Wajir, close to the Kenya–Somalia border, targeting Al-Shabaab militants. According to the forces involved, the troops raided an IED workshop, reportedly killing approximately 50–60 militants and seizing roughly 90 IEDs.

A minority of the IEDs appear to be Al-Shabaab’s well-known Claymore-type IEDs, ranging from smaller units to wider flat variants. The vast majority of the seized devices, however, appear to consist of linear shaped charges, which are atypical of the group’s established TTPs. The presence of these IEDs – particularly in such quantities – represents a notable departure from previously documented Al-Shabaab IED patterns. If confirmed, this development may have implications for the regional threat environment in Jubbaland, particularly in the Lower Juba region, as well as across the border in Kenya, especially in Garissa County.
