On September 13, 2026, a new Russian standard electronic firing device designated UP (УП) was documented in Ukraine.
The emergence of the UP represents a shift away from older Soviet standard delay firing devices, which consisted predominantly of mechanical VZD-series devices, alongside rare operational appearances and tactical discussions surrounding the Russian electronic timer VZD-135.
Ukrainian forces appear to rely primarily on Soviet-era stockpiles though select units have been equipped with standard American M147 electronic time-delay firing devices.
Across the theater, time-delay firing devices are primarily documented as auxiliary self-destruct mechanisms for various IEDs and UAV warheads. However, their versatile design allows for deployment in diverse tactical scenarios, including sabotage operations and diversionary tactics.
