On May 21, 2016, a tractor trailer packed with a large quantity of ammonium nitrate mixed with aluminum nitrate, and featuring an RC initiation system connected to three electric detonators, in addition to chunks of TNT, was seized in the town of Yaytas, in Diyarbakir Province, south-eastern Turkey, at a random checkpoint set-up by the Turkish Army. In the course of the incident, a PKK operative was killed and an RC transmitter was found on his body.
The main explosive in the VBIED, a mixture of ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder, is commonly used by the PKK for large IED main charge compositions. The explosive was wrapped in plastic to keep it separate from the manure that was piled on top, presumably owing to the high humidity content of the manure that would adversely affect the ammonium nitrate.
