PDF Militants Modify RC Receivers for Extended Signaling Range, Myanmar

In January and February 2022, security forces in northwestern Myanmar’s Sagaing Region came across two scenes of roadside IEDs placed by militants aligned with the local People’s Defense Force, both of which involved the use of RC alarm-based initiation systems based on commercial devices modified with extended antennas for increased signaling range. In both incidents the modification involved connecting a length of copper coil to both the receiver and transmitter – a method known from past militant use and discourse in different conflict theaters. This modification, intended at overcoming the short operating ranges of commercial devices, likely addresses an ongoing need in the arena, and represents a consequential stage in the progression of complex and effective IED scenes by PDF militants, enabling them to impede the advancement of and repel military forces.
